Yelling into the void.

As soon as you decide to start blogging seriously, to make a name for yourself based on the merit of your words, you realize something – 99% of everything out there is just noise.

When I look at the quantity of smart, fresh work that is being created on a daily basis I really don’t know whether I should laugh or cry.  Consider those “Top Ten…” lists on sites like forbes or askmen – there is no substance.  Usually it is a means to a promotional end, or it’s a shill for a few more pageviews.

With Forbes specifically, why do I have to load an entirely new page just to look at the next slide?  If I wanted to load the next slideshow, maybe, but one slide per page is just foolishness.

What needs to change is the 20th century mentality of squeezing people for everything they’re worth rather than providing value that they are happy to pay for.  Take tripadvisor.com for example:  This is a lead generation site masquerading as a legitimate travel site, and to a certain extent it is – if only because of the reviews made by real people, who really care.

Now compare it to Pandora, it’s radio.  What makes it better than normal radio, or just hitting shuffle on iTunes?  It adds value to your listening experience, because it provides more than the sum of its parts.  There are so many sites and companies that take the easy way to profitability rather than trying to do the right thing.

This is what I think about before writing every one of my posts.  I ask myself, how am I going to be worthy of your time?

Now I feel like this is a choose your own adventure – What will you do?
